As some of you know I've been temping as of late. Temping my little heart out all over New York City's financial center. Although, on Monday, having had enough of investment bankers and their incessant talk of all things money related I'm switching temp agencies and heading to more creative pastures...hopefully.
In light of my temping and wanting to try to make my days go by just a little bit faster I've decided to start a temping rating system. Rating a number of things from snacks, chair comfortableness, and staff temperament. And since my mind is still in the world of rating things, I'll use the following scale:
1 = Hellish
3 = Are they serious with this shit?
5 = Fine, if you have no expectations
7 = Niiiice
10 = Are there any job openings?
Starting from my last temp assignment first.
I'll call this place, Bennigans, Jokey, Bernard, and Vulkan.
- Snacks and Drinks: 5 - they had a small refrigerator with some assorted soda and one of those coffee drink station things that produce one cup of bland coffee at a time and no snacks to speak of. Not even a bag of pretzels.
- Chair: 4 - It was junky and too low to the ground, my back is still sore
- Other Admins: 1 - These jokers didn't explain anything to me, including how to transfer the phone system or the names of who I was working for, yet expected me to know everything they knew, including what the bosses sounded like from far away and where their offices were located.
- Boss Man: 1 - This guy was a total asshole. He yelled at me after I told his wife he was out of the office. Um, HE WAS OUT OF THE OFFICE, affair anyone?
- Air Temperature: 7 - Fine, no sweating in my jackets
- Location: 7 - I did have to walk 3 avenues over from the subway to the office, but the blocks weren't crowded
- Extras: 8 - This was a nice bonus, there was a mobile post office van outside of the office building in case you need to mail something or pick up some stamps...very nice. There was a Subway sandwich shop across the street, run by some very quick Indian dudes. Fast and a lot cheaper than most Manhattan lunch places.
Temp Friendly Average - 4.7 This place really did suck
Next place, I'll call it - Bushlyle Gang
- Snacks and Drinks: 9 - the bulk of the points come from the fact that they bring in Dunkin Donuts coffee every morning! They offered sodas, vitamin water, and plenty of snacks, although not many healthy alternatives in the snack arena.
- Chair: 10 - great chairs, high backs, fully adjustable and brand new
- Other Admins: 10 - super nice, helpful, funny, and all watched reality tv and liked to discus who deserved to win American Idol
- Boss Man: 6 - I worked here twice, for two different guys. The first was interesting and nice the second barely noticed my existence and wouldn't make eye-contact when speaking to me. Bizarro.
- Air Temperature: 7 Fine - did not sweat in my suit jacket
- Location: 7 - Very close to the subway, entrance to building only across the street, although I did have to change trains once
- Extras: 8 - They set me up with a temporary security badge, which was really nice since I didn't have to check in with building security every morning
Temp Friendly Average - 8.1
